Born 1811 Calcutta 1863 London English novelist

Sent home from his birthplace, Calcutta, when his father died. Went to Trinity College, Cambridge but did not take degree. Financial worry made him earn a living in journalism. His first literary publications were a failure but his great novels, Vanity Fair(1847-8), Pendennis (1848), Henry Esmond (1852) and The Newcomes (1853-55) followed.
