Apprenticed to stonemason at age of 14. 1782 went to London. His masonry arch bridge over the Severn enhanced his reputation as did the Pont-Cysyllte aqueduct and other works on the Ellesmere Canal. Constructed canals, roads, bridges as well as churches, manses and harbours. Responsible for draining large tracts of the Fen country.
