Studied at Royal College of Music and in Berlin and Paris. First success in 1910 with the choral Sea Symphony. Became a leader of English folk song movement. Composed large number of works in all forms including the ballad opera (Hugh the Drover), the Ballet (Job) symphonies, choral works and the opera (The Pilgrim’s Progress). Provided music for stage and film.
