Born 1925 - English Labour politician.

Educated at New College, Oxford. Renounced his title to enable him to enter the House of Commons in 1963. Cabinet minister in the Wilson and Callaghan governments from 1964 - 79, as Minister of Technology, Secretary of State for both Industry and Energy. Stood unsuccessfully for deputy leadership of the party. Retired from the House of Commons in May 2001. Published Diaries in seven volumes covering the period from 1942-1990 and has written seven other books, including Arguments for Socialism (1979).
