Scottish born Andy Murray turned pro in 2005 at the age of 18. The right-handed Scotsman became the youngest player to represent GB in the Davis Cup in 2005 while playing for his country against Israel. He is now regarded as Great Britain's number one seed and represented Great Britain at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
He won the SAP Open in San Jose USA in 2006, gaining his first the ATP title. He then retained the title in 2007. Perhaps the highlight of his career so far came when Murray beat world number one Roger Federer in three sets at the Dubai Championships in May 2008. He also won the 2008 Marseille and Doha Opens.
Murray missed Wimbledon 2007 because of an injured wrist picked up in Hamburg. In the fourth round of Wimbledon 2008 Murray staged a gritty comeback to beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet and reach a Wimbeldon quarter final for the first time in his career. Gasquet served for the match in the third set, but Murray fought hard to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-4 to take the match. The Scotsman was then beaten in straight sets by Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-6-4 in the quarter final. Nadel went on to win the men's singles final.
Off court the popular Andy Murray was the winner of the 2005 BBC Scotland Sports Personality of Year award. He is the brother of another international tennis star, Jamie Murray, who partnered him at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in the Men's Doubles. Andy Murray also represented Great Britain in the Singles at Beijing 2008.
The Murrays are obviously a sporting family, their grandfather played professional football for Scottish club Hibs. Andy is also a talented footballer and once attracted interest from the prestigious Glasgow Rangers as a youngster.
