Sapper
Born on 28th of September 1888
Died on 14th of August 1937
Sapper was the pen-name of the then soldier-author HC McNeile, used to protect his identity as serving officers were forbidden to publish openly. A professional soldier, he served in the Royal Engineers, seeing action at Ypres and the Somme, wining the MC and twice mentioned in despatches. After the war he published many novels, most famously the Bulldog Drummond series: jingoistic, class-ridden, racist but undoubtedly thrilling tales of English gentlemen thwarting unpleasant foreigners. Gassed more than once during his war service he died of throat cancer probably rooted in those events.
