Flinders Petrie
Born on 3rd of June 1853
Died on 28th of July 1942
Petrie’s archaeological interest began as a child, when he decried the rough digging going on at a Roman villa site on the Isle of Wight. In the UK he studied Stonehenge early in his career, but he is remembered for his work in and on Egypt, including surveys of the pyramids and the temples at Giza. He was an energetic man who published scores of books, and brought up in a Plymouth Brethren household had very Spartan tastes. Petrie, who had fascist leanings, had a pet theory about the ancient Egyptian civilisation being brought about by invaders of Caucasoid origins ‘improving’ the indigenous African population.
