Son of Jewish music hall artistes. Early life included work as diamond digger and boxer. Moved to London in 1946. Early film roles included The Lavender Hill Mob (1951). Performed with Tony Hancock in Hancock’s Half Hour. Starred in television sitcoms, best known for his performances in the Carry On films.
