Studied at Loughborough University gaining degree in sports science. Played as a centre for Leicester Tigers (1979-85). Made his England debut in 1980 gaining 11 caps for his country. Was coach of England from 1997 to 2004, winning the Grand Slam in 2003 and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Knighted in the 2004 New Year’s Honours.
