Appointed naturalist to Matthew Flinder’s coastal survey of Australia in 1801-05. In charge of Joseph Bank’s library and collection of plants. Botanical keeper of British Museum in 1827. First to note that in general living cells have a nucleus. Noted movement of fine particles in a liquid, named the Brownian movement.
