William Bateson

Born 1861. Died 1926 - English geneticist.
He wrote Materials for the Study of Variation: treated with special regard to discontinuity in the origin of species, in 1894. This catalogued unusual physical variations in animal specimens such as bees, crayfish and in humans. He was the first person to use the term genetics to describe the study of biological inheritance. With Reginald Punnett he discovered genetic linkage and founded the Journal of Genetics in 1920.
