Ruthin lies in the Vale of Clwyd overlooked by the hills of the Clwydian range and the Hiraethog Moors and is a pretty little market town that enjoys a great history built on a red sandstone hill it was a strategic lookout over the River Clwyd. Ruthin’s origins can be traced back some 4,000 years, but it was in the 13th century that a fort was built in the red sandstone that was common to this area. In 1277 Edward I granted the castle to Dafydd brother of Prince Llewelyn ap Graffudd and for centuries this castle was to play an important role in the defense of the area. In 1826 the modern castle was constructed and extended around and over the ancient ruins, in its time the castle played host to members of the Royal Family including Prince Charles, visitors today can enjoy the castle and the acres of private garden all set alongside the River Clwyd. Today the buildings in Ruthin reflect the best of architectural styles making the town an outstanding Conservation Area worthy of preservation with some excellent Victorian and Edwardian properties. Ruthin though built its reputation as a market town and today is home to one of the largest cattle and sheep auction markets in Wales. The town centre offers a wide variety of local traditional shops as well as some of the larger supermarkets. Ruthin offers visitors and residents a quality of life that is rarely found nowadays, the convenience of a town yet with the countryside pursuits on the doorstep.
