Rhayader is one of the oldest towns in mid Wales and dates back to the 5th Century although Neolithic remains have been identified in the area indicating that there was a settlement there prior to that. The town lies in the very heart of Wales almost midway between Hereford and Aberystwyth and between the two most visually exciting ranges of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons in the Upper Wye Valley and surrounded by hills. Today with a population of around 2,00 people Rhayader remains a firm favourite with local residents and visitors alike, a popular tourist location for the variety of outdoor activities that are on offer, from fishing on the River Wye or at the Elan Valley Lakes, to walks and mountain biking in the surrounding hills which provide some of the most beautiful views around. The Elan Valley is also home to some of the most unusual and rarest wildlife and plants that can be found in Wales whilst the Red Kite can usually be spotted in the surrounding countryside – if you miss it though don’t panic, the Red Kite Centre on the outskirts of the town at Gigrin Farm where buzzards, kites and ravens can be seen. Whilst you are in Rhayader you may want to visit the Welsh Glass Crystal workshops where all the crystal pieces are individually mouth blown and hand cut which are unique to Welsh Crystal. This busy and historic market town makes it an ideal location for the energetic visitor as well as those who appreciate the quieter quality of life with some truly dramatic scenery.
