Congleton is at the Eastern edge of the Cheshire Plain at the southern reaches of the Pennines. First mentioned in the Doomsday Book Congleton grew at a rapid pace. By the 1600’s the main occupation in the town was farming and almost everyone was involved with farming as either a primary or supplementary occupation – nearly every innkeeper, mercer ( a dealer of cloth) and shoemaker had livestock or farmed the land for food. Despite Congleton’s early link with the cloth trade it wasn’t until the late 1700’s that the first silk mill was erected in Congleton and this mechanisation set the standard and opened the way for ribbon weaving and cotton spinning to become established in the area. In keeping with the industrialisation of the Victorian age the arrival of the steam train further assisted in securing the financial growth of the town as rail links were established between Congleton, Manchester and London. Today Congleton boasts a population of around 29,000 who all benefit from a location set in some of the most picturesque countryside in England and yet with a range of shopping, leisure and educational facilities that satisfy the demands of the most hectic lifestyles. Commuting is rarely fun however when you return to Congleton after a day of work then you truly appreciate the benefits this market town offers.
